Garry Davidson, then the GM/coach, had Ferster as an assistant for two years, promoted him to head man for a 42-win regular season and a berth in the league championship series in 2003-04, and then fired him that summer. At the time, Davidson was quoted about philosophies being off track.
"I never had it planned out like this," said Williams, who got to know about the SilverBacks because he has a son at Minnesota prep school Shattuck-St. Mary's, a hockey power with strong ties to Murray, a former coach there.
"I wanted to learn from Garry and I learned a great deal."
